ABOUT NAXOS, GREECE
Although it remains less widely known compared to some of its neighboring Cycladic islands, Naxos is among the most captivating destinations in Greece. Located in the central part of the Cyclades island group, in the heart of the Aegean Sea, it is also the largest island of the archipelago.
Naxos’ remarkable ancient heritage, combined with the lasting influence of the Venetians and Franks, has contributed to the island’s rich collection of historical landmarks and archaeological sites. The most famous of these, and the symbol of Naxos itself, is the Portara — the surviving monumental gate of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo, one of the Olympian gods.
Beyond its impressive historical treasures, Naxos is distinguished by its exceptional natural beauty. As the greenest island in the Cyclades, it offers a diverse landscape of dramatic mountains, fertile valleys, stunning beaches, and charming rural villages, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts.
Chora, the island’s capital and main town, is a fascinating blend of Venetian and traditional Cycladic architecture. Dominating the whitewashed houses of the town is the impressive Venetian castle, which adds a distinctive medieval atmosphere to the scenery.
For adventure lovers, Naxos provides countless opportunities to explore and enjoy its natural surroundings. Discover picturesque mountain villages, climb Mount Zas, experience exciting water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, or follow hiking trails through lush landscapes. A holiday in Naxos promises endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.
The island’s beaches are also considered among the finest in the Cyclades. Its coastline is decorated with secluded coves and long stretches of sandy shores, offering crystal-clear cobalt waters and peaceful surroundings. Make sure to visit and swim at some of the island’s most beautiful beaches, including Aliko, Plaka, and Agios Prokopios.
